CPS And Parental Rights

I was a foster parent and worked with many kind, caring and dedicated CPS workers.    As in any field there are people that should NOT be in the position of power that they are in.  Please understand that CPS sees the worse in humanity.   It is depressing.   They assume the worst in order to rescue a child from hidden abuse.    You need to be patient with them.

If you suspect that you are going to have an issue with Child Protective Services (CPS) related to homeschooling, then contact HSLDA immediately at https://www.hslda.org.

If you suspect you are going to have an issue with CPS that is not related to homeschooling, then contact Pacific Justice immediately at http://pacificjustice.org/how-we-can-help-you.

They both specialize in defending parental rights.   They can help you most BEFORE your children are taken out of your home.    Knowing that you have a lawyer frequently causes an over zealous worker to pause and reflect upon the situation.   The process after your child is taken can drag out because that CPS worker needs to justify his or her action.   In general, you are allowed only a one hour, once a week visit with your child.   You DO NOT want the situation to ever come to that.   Not every CPS worker is automatically biased against homeschoolers, but some are and that is the reason for this cautionary post.

The following are ongoing issues that I think you should be aware of:

He was just seven when he was taken away from them at gunpoint in June 2009. The family was on an airplane about to leave Sweden for their new home in India, where Annie’s family is from.  Also on Shine: Can Kids Be Raised in a Gender-Neutral Society? Sweden Thinks So  But the people who took him weren’t kidnappers or terrorists — they were Swedish police officers operating under orders from social service agencies. And social services ordered them to seize the boy—not to prevent him from being physically or sexually abused—but for being homeschooled.
