Power In The Word and In Deed

This week, I liked my Community Bible Study homework questions so much I typed them up some of them.   I cut-and-pasted the verse references to where the answers can be found from http://www.blueletterbible.org (English Standard Version).

This week we were in Acts 3:

Act 3:1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
Act 3:2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.
Act 3:3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.
Act 3:4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.”
Act 3:5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

What power does Peter use to heal this lame man?

Act 3:6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”

Act 3:7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.

What is reaction of the crowd?

Act 3:8 And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
Act 3:9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God,
Act 3:10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

In which verses does Peter credit Jesus with this healing?

Act 3:11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s.
Act 3:12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?
Act 3:13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our
fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.

Act 3:14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,
Act 3:15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.
Act 3:16 And his name–by faith in his name–has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

How does God reveal the glory of His servant Jesus?

Jhn 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Hbr 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Hbr 2:9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

1Pe 1:21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

What does the “the author of life” mean?

Jhn 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Jhn 1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Jhn 5:21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Jhn 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. [fn] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
Jhn 11:26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Jhn 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Act 3:17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.
Act 3:18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.

From your study and thought last week, what does the word repent mean?

Act 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out,

What reasons does Peter give to repent?

Act 3:20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus,

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2Pe 3:10     But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies [fn] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
2Pe 3:11     Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
2Pe 3:12     waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!

How do these Scriptures support Peter’s claim that turning to God in repentance will wipe out our sins?

Act 3:21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

2Cr 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Hbr 9:26  for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the  world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

1Jo 3:4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is
lawlessness.
1Jo 3:5 You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

State some reasons God sent Jesus to earth.

Act 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out,
Act 3:20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus,
Act 3:21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.
Act 3:22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your  brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you.
Act 3:23 And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be  destroyed from the people.’
Act 3:24 And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days.
Act 3:25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’
Act 3:26 God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

What does Jesus say will happen to those who reject His message?

Mat 10:32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,
Mat 10:33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Mar 16:15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
Mar 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Luk 6:45     The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Luk 6:46     “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Luk 6:47     Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
Luk 6:48     he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
Luk 6:49     But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Jhn 3:36     Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Jhn 8:23     He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

Jhn 8:24     I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

Jhn 12:46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Jhn 12:47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
Jhn 12:48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

The consequence of rejecting or receiving Jesus.

Luk 11:23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luk 11:28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep
it!”
